it's funny, because i've been meaning to post this video for weeks and had spaced on it. when i first thought about it i meant to mention the dogs playing poker. but with time, and the more times i've seen it on tv, the baby giraffe slowly reduced everything else in the ad to background noise...

granted, the dogs are better than anything except the giraffe in this ad...but they're also a long way behind in second place...

these are people that still believe that wrestling is real (and flashlight wrestling does sound awesome)

these are outcasts that just want to be part of the majority for once.

A strange, strange man has been showing up on morning shows throughout the Midwest, claiming to be a yo-yo trick champion. He is not. He is actually terrible at yo-yo. Yet he keeps getting on the air.

Little is known about "K-Strass," who goes by Kenny Strasser, or sometimes Kenny Strassburg. He claims to be from Wisconsin (except when he doesn't). He claims to be from a broken home, with his own addiction issues (except when he isn't).

All we know is that K-Strass has shown up on television six times in the past month, showing off his yo-yo "skills" and generally embarrassing the hosts.

i flew delta down to mexico last week and had the pleasure of watching this safety video (no...seriously). primarily it's because the woman who "stars" in it is so captivating (and allegedly an actual delta employee). you get the feeling she's right on the border of morphing into one of the characters from the "blackhole sun" video. thankfully she doesn't. the sassy touches (when she makes sure you're aware there's no smoking on board, when the asian guy's tooth "glints", etc...).

http://blog.delta.com/2008/02/20/world-premiere-deltas-new-in-flight-safety-video/

it's surely a sign of our media super-saturated world that even airline safety messages are now getting attitude and (relatively) high production values. while it may be something of a minor loss in the battle against irony, i still think it's pretty great...

and did i mention that the woman who narrates it is transfixing? oh yeah...i did....

Every other parent is saying "how could he?" while there is a little part inside them that understands just how frustrating and strong the urge can be to shake an infant - ergo, countless public service ads.

They did work on me. I now only fantasize about punching my infant. (not true - just last night I had a real urge to shake sick baby who wouldn't go to sleep).

I think this is one of those crimes for which there are real class issues about enforcement. The poor minorities are convicted of murder and the white middle class go off to a hospital for a while to chill out. I'm convinced the disparity in prosecution rates of minorities in these crimes far outstrips the disparity in actual perpetration between minorities and whites. See this link for a paper exposing this issue. (Webmaster - please comb internet for a link that would support what I'm saying. Then insert it here.)

when i saw this, i immediately went to youtube in what i assumed would be a hopeless attempt to find the never shake a baby public service spot...it is hopeless, but for a different reason...

there are tons and tons of never shake a baby videos...now, i remember the tag line, but could i pick the never shake a baby ad that aired on local tv in new hampshire in the early 90s out of a lineup? probably not...

Having watched the movie "Scratch" a while ago, I started paying more attention to the difference between DJ's - who's primary motivation is to keep the party moving and booties on the dance floor, and turntablists - who use the turntables as more of an instrument for individual expression.

Kid Koala is most definitely a turntablist:

I'm going to park the lyrics here for future enjoyment in the event of a disruption in the tubes.

(ahhhhh)
Washington, Washington
Six foot eight
Weighs a fucking ton
Opponents beware
Opponents beware
He's coming
He's coming
He's coming

Let me lay it on the line
He had two on the vine
I mean two sets of testicles
So divine
On a horse made of crystal
He patrolled the land
With the mason ring and schnauzer
And his perfect hands

Here comes George
In control
Women dug his snuff
And his gallant stroll
Ate opponents' brains
And invented cocaine
He's coming
He's coming
He's coming

Washington, Washington
Six foot twenty
Fucking killing for fun
Spread, spread
The Delaware
He's coming
He's coming
He's coming

Sue me if I go too fast
But the sons of his opponents
Wished that he was their dad
Got a wig for his wig
Got a brain for his heart
He'll kick you apart
He'll kick you apart
Ooh!

He'll save children
But not the British children
He'll save children
But not the British children
He'll save children
But not the British children
He'll save children
But not the British children

(drum sounds)

He had a pocket full of horses
Fucked the shit out of bears
Threw a knife into heaven
And could kill with a stare
He made love like an eagle
Falling out of the sky
Killed his sensei in a duel
And he never said why

Washington, Washington
Twelve stories high
Made of radiation
The present beware,
The future beware
He's coming
He's coming
He's coming

Did I mention his four nuts?
Well he also had four dicks
If you took off his boot
You'd see the dicks growing off his feet
I heard that motherfucker had like thirty god damn dicks

He once held an opponent's wife's hand
In a jar of acid
At a party

(brring)
(whoosh)

is that you can literally see her tripping over all of the coaching she has gotten to get through this part of the pageant. it's like political debates. no matter what the question is, stay on message. there are some things you simply must weave into your response. unfortunately for her, the specific geographic content of the question happened to overlap with the vague geographic metaphors of her "preparation":

1. there are disadvantaged people in this country. i am not one of them, but i should mention them in my answer.
2. some people live in africa, asia, iraq, and lots of other places. i am not one of them and i don't know where those places are, but i should mention them in my answer.
3. people love to hear about "our children". i don't have any (acknowledged), but i should mention them in my anwser.
4. education is the answer to every problem. i am clearly not the "education type", but i should mention it in my anwer.

but i disagree with spacehippie and rabble-rouser. there are money quotes. as in:

"some people out there in our nation don't have maps"

and

merely mentioning south africa. in 1985 perhaps that would fly. but you know what she was frantically searching her three card mental rolodex for was darfur or any other cause for which people wear cool bracelets...i mean, if she'd come out and said something about testicular cancer and lance armstrong she may have been able to avert disaster despite the fact that it has nothing at all to do with amercians finding the us on a map. but as soon as she came up with south africa, she was complete toast.

what amazes me is that host mario lopez (slater, of "saved by the bell" fame) was able to keep himself from a complete hysterical breakdown. you can see him starting to smile, but he did a herculean job of holding it together.

so...

clearly she was very nervous.
clearly she is very dim.
clearly if i were a better person i would not be adding fuel to a fire which is already burning well out of control.
clearly i do not have the willpower or inclination to act like said "better" person.

sadly, i think the most pertinent comment i've heard on this whole affair came from two fraternity type guys i was stuck in line in front of at the time warner cable office today. they, of course said, "dude, who cares what she says...she's hot".

and in the end, for her, that is truly all that will matter.
It's one big money quote
