keep in mind that harold washington -- an african-american who beat richie daley in the primary, overcame a shitload of racist democrats, became the first black to be mayor, and ran a pretty damn clean / effective city government (well, considering what came before) -- well, he's basically a democratic saint in the state of illinois and perhaps more beloved by the african-american community than even obama.

also keep in mind that the african-american vote is the key vote in the primary between governor quinn (sitting because blago is out and he was lt. governor) and comptroller dan hynes.

now, watch this ad. it's like the holy grail of political advertisements.

(and ps: it's dead spot on -- everything said about quinn is pretty much established fact)

On your recommendation.

I've started watching the Lehrer News Hour, since it sounded exactly like what I've been looking for. And you're right, it has restored a bit of my faith, and made me a little less cynical about newscasts in general.

I too came away with the same impresssion of Gravel. I'm pretty positive I wouldn't want him running the country, but I would like him whispering in the ear of whoever does.

Thanks for the Lehrer tip.
lehrer once again...

you know what i'm watching? a 20 minute interview with ray suarez and mike gravel, as part of their effort to give real time to all of the candidates. i don't think he has the chops to be president (not mention the funding) but he says some interesting, different and conroversial things.

for instance...

apparently there was a resolution sponsored by lieberman last week imposing sanctions on the iranian national guard (or some such thing). gravel's view is that this is exactly what we did with iraq and that it is nothing more than another step along the way to some form of military intervention in iran. he says the democrats should be ashamed of themselves for letting this go on. but what is truly extraordinary is that he blamed leiberman's presenting the resolution on aipac, the american israel public affairs committee. ray suarez could hardly believe what he had just heard.

suarez: so you're saying that lieberman proposal was presented at the behest of the american israel public affairs committe?

gravel: well, there will be more information from my campaign about that this week, but...yes, that is what i'm saying.

aside from that? he's the first candidate i've heard mention that we spend more on our military than the rest of the world COMBINED. china spends about 4% of the total, russia about 5%. i'm sure those stats are pretty available if you care to lookt them up, but you certainly don't see hillary/barack/john bringing it up. as gravel says, makes the whole republican argument that we don't have the money to fund universal healthcare pretty absurd.

among some of his promises, which are clearly pie in the sky, but at least he's thining differently:
- all troops aside from embassy guards out of iraq in 120 days
- us off of gasoline in 5 years and off of carbon fuels in 10 years

why is an invasion of iran such a bad idea? how about the devastating effect it will have the economy because of the impact on oil supplies through the straits of hormuz?

like i say, this guy doesn't stand a chance, but he's at least bringing some actual ideas to the table rather than toeing the line like all the super-funded front-runners.

i haven't seen a better display of the disconnect between d.c. media punditry and real life in quite some time.

that, or this host just isn't very good.

the fake excitement over the fact it took 3 takes...the continued insistence that he didn't understand the videos despite gravel's (inane, but pretty simple and clear) repeated explanations - it was enought to make me puke.

and then there's gravel...who seems like he was totally oblivious to the host's snarky, cynical tone.

somebody in the comments put it best (and most correctly): gravel is the ron paul of the democratic field.

with the advent of youtube, etc., i suspect we're going to be treated to an awful lot of political ads that would either (a) never be made; or (b) never be seen by most of us.

which means...i'm gonna make sure you all see all of them.

to start...one of the best i've ever seen. hell, i like bill richardson 50% just for having watched it:
