veganism
indeed...

the article actually isn't all that great, but its heart (and mind) is in the right place...

"The grandstanding of vegans for carefully selected life forms, to serve their own sensitivities—through their meat- and dairy-free diets, their avoidance of leather and other animal products—doesn't produce much besides a sense of their own virtue....The supreme biocentric act is not to discover yet one more animal product to abstain from. The supreme biocentric act is dying, returning the finite matter and energy you have appropriated for yourself and giving them back to the creatures you stole them from. And what makes them so pure? Are they shedding tears as they tear you and each other apart? The real "crime" is existence, not being or using animals."

and it obviously wasn't meant in such a direct way. it's just that, for whatever reason, i have a personal mission against all things vegan, and articles like that above which serve to point out the sheer ridicularity of it are good by me...

so my apologies to little crown shakur.

veganism is one of the most ridiculous things we have yet conjured. while i hate, as a rule, to fall back on "common sense" (lord knows there are few concepts which can claim responsibility for a larger share of the world's idiocy) in this case i'm going to do it. humans evolved as omnivores. our bodies are machined the way they are for a reason, both developmentally and functionally. if you choose to live your life as a vegan, so be it, but i will not be able to refrain myself from both considering and calling you utterly silly. and when you try and pull your morally superior hippy dippy bullshit act on me, i feel perfectly comfortable smacking you upside the head with the nearest available cheesburger.

i understand that people may want to make the case that our food supply is so tainted by hormones and factory farming and all that that staying away from all animal-based foodstuff makes sense (ergo the organic food boom industry). i know there are other reasons for being a vegan but like the reasons for being a republican, they all blend together in a fog of faffery for me. but if, as an adult, you feel that strongly about this issue, then go ahead and be as silly as you want. i'll be at a french restaurant having hot foie gras followed by steak tartare.

but when it comes to raising children, you have a responsibility to do what's demonstrably and logically best for the health of your child. and anyone who can't figure out, or couldn't figure out with about 10 minutes of research, that a vegan diet ain't gonna cut it for an infant/small child, simply shouldn't be breeding in the first place.

so it is with great joy that i read that piece today on the op-ed page of the nyt:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/21/opinion/21planck.html

my favorite quote?

"Indigenous cuisines offer clues about what humans, naturally omnivorous, need to survive, reproduce and grow: traditional vegetarian diets, as in India, invariably include dairy and eggs for complete protein, essential fats and vitamins. There are no vegan societies for a simple reason: a vegan diet is not adequate in the long run."
