I actually bought Bad Romance on itunes. Total guilty pleasure.

She's Madonna 2.0, and Madonna was pretty cool.

i love lady gaga. i love her acknowledged debt to bowie and the rest of the glam rock kids. i love the more intelligent and interesting updating of madonna's performance art act.

lady gaga is another one i "discovered" at the gym. for months i had no idea who was singing the songs, but then someone in my office sent me the itunes file for telephone, and there you go.

i really only tend to like the major poppy songs that have gone or are going intergalactic platinum (namely the ones i hear at the gym - i haven't yet ruled out the fact that my love of lady gaga is directly related to some kind of pavlovian endorphin connection).

so let's go with:

paparazzi (definite favorite)

poker face (somewhat embarrassing yet unstoppable lady gaga addiction captured well here by amy poehler in parks and recreation:

telephone

bad romance

(and many thanks to autumn for opening my eyes on this one)

i love this song. always have always will.

and as a big fan of house i was so amazingly impressed that they made it house's ringtone.

however i had never seen the video until today...and it is AWESOME in every way that the video for mmmm....bop should be awesome....

a few more country entries....

forever and ever amen - randy travis

this song probably doesn't really belong in this category, but it's on the bubble. one can overdose on randy travis very easily, butthis song is just about a pitch-perfect bridge between old country and nu country. in the wrong hands, with the wrong voice, this song could be awful...but he nails it perfectly, sugars it up, but never lets it get saccharine....

you want to know a great country music line...

"as long as old men sit and talk about the weather
as long as old women sit and talk about old men"

delta dawn - tanya tucker

i heard this song over the closing credits of a movie i saw recently, but i can't seem to track it down on google (i thought it was "the informant!" but if so it's not on the soundtrack - it's all marvin hamlisch all the time). in any case, this is another one that at least originates in the "country songs my mom listened to" category. i know that it's about a burned out beauty, but i haven't looked or listened too closely to the lyrics. and with this song i like it that way.

delta dawn was quite the hit, and the fact that ms. tucker recorded it at an age when most girls are getting sodomized by roman polanski makes it that much cooler.

oh, and by the way...

"since u been gone" still rocks. hard.
we all have them

and often they're what i use the itunes store for...

current chart toppers...

since u been gone - kelly clarkson
i love this song. it's angry, it rocks. and yet...it is by american idol spawn...but i love it in spite of myself. and i think i will always love this song.

beautiful girls - sean kingston
there is a strain of "in spite of myself" songs that i pick up at the gym. maybe it's the endorphins. but when this song came out last summer i was always happy about it. it's very sugary, bubble-gummy, and yet i had to own it. it's lost its shine a bit, but i still throw it down every once in a while. i think the upbeat repetition of "su-i-cid-al" is what hooked me.

i love a rainy night - eddie rabbit
a second strain of this category of songs is "country" music that my mom used to listen to when i was a kid. i still have a soft spot for some songs by alabama, kenny rogers, the oak ridge boys, etc. this song entered my consciousness that way, but i like it all the same (even with some of the bad interludes in the middle).

two doors down - dolly parton
same category as i love a rainy night. my mom loved dolly parton, and so i listed to a lot of it as a kid. most of her songs i've grown out of, but this one i can't quite shake.

there are certainly many, many others and i'll update this thread with as they come to me.

i was also thining of starting a thread called "songs i love in spite of simplicissimus" but that would be a long, long list....
