i can't help it: something about this whole holmgren thing is making me feel slightly sick to my stomach.
is it the fear he will spurn us, or the fear that he won't?
hb must have thoughts?
as for mangini, i continue to think one thing: he was the absolute right guy to come in, shed the deadwood, not sign any big contracts, stockpile draft picks, and restore discipline.
that said, he's also the wrong guy to make 11 draft choices (many early ones) or have access to what should be the most cap room in the nfl in 2010. if this team nails this off-season, they are in the playoffs in 2011/2012 and super bowl contenders in 2013.
i feel bad for him sort of - it's a raw deal and likely the end of his head coaching career. but not bad enough i want to gamble the franchise's next 5 years on what he does this off-season. because
if they fuck it up, it will be 2015 or 2016 before they are going to even sniff 10 wins. |

Or maybe I knew it once and forgot. Doug Flutie's hail mary at Boston College was against Bernie's Miami team.
Cool. |

...the next 60 minutes were even more absurd.
This team is rotting from within. I can't think of a more disfunctional Browns organization in my 30-some odd years of fandom.
Maybe Bernie can breathe a little life into this club. That would be a story, wouldn't it? The favorite son returns to revive the city's most beloved and beleagured franchise?
Ya gotta hope:

it is the most absurd 2 minutes of anything i've ever watched. |

i've watched the first 3 games. almost in their entirety.
and i have to say, i have never, ever, ever seen such a bad football team play.
sure, 1999 was bad. but they were an expansion team, and there was "excitement" around players like time couch and kevin johnson. sure, none of it was deserved but it *felt* like you were watching a team develop.
2000 and 2001 were likewise awful, but there was still the sense that something was being put together.
2002 inexplicably led to the playoffs.
2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 were butch davis' fault, but if i recall the majority of those seasons saw the browns @2-3, 3-4 and 3-3 in late october, so there was hope for at least part of the season.
and there was the mirage of 2007, followed by the crash of 2008.
but i have never. ever, ever seen a team this bad.
i didn't want them to draft sanchez at no. 5 (because frankly they would have destroyed him) but to get a couple of middle-of-the-road starters like elam and barton and a no. 2 and no. 5 (?) draft pick for him) seems increasingly criminal.
and what of those THREE second rounders? the WR have basically done nothing (if they've even been active) in those first three games. i know there's a big drop off from 1st to 2nd rounds, but aren't second rounders pretty much supposed to be starting or having pretty serious roles?
and the fact that 5 players (1/5th of the team!) have filed or are about file grievences? hell, mangini may be "right" on all of it, but if you're right and you're players hate you is that really doing much?
what about the insane quarterback competition that ended on the last day of preseason? it took brady quinn, who had decent stats last year, and appears to have made him a gun shy wimp terrified of a bad throw. of course, quinn's terror is vindicated when he's yanked after 2 1/2 games.
and what about the right side of the line? what good is drafting a center in the first round when hand fraley is certainly playing well enough? what good is drafting 2 wide receivers and a reach LB on the second round? maybe all of these make sense, excpet when you see how horrible the right side of the line is. it doesn't matter that you've got steinbach and thomas on the left side, when the right side is god-awful.
i gotta say, i've never, ever seen a team quit on a game like i did the browns this week. i mean, it was clear after a quarter that they were going to be smoked. but still.
i start this conversation only because i'm convinced that magnini could be fired this year. not because they're going to suck. we all knew that 6-10 was a hopeful record. but because they are sucking in ways that much, much more horrible to watch than normal.
even for the browns. |

But what about the 86 Browns?
Superbowl Shuffle + winning the Super Bowl = cool.
Masters of the Gridiron + the drive = sad.
