apparently kids are dropping like flies as a result of gang violence in chicago (and it ain't even summer yet, which is "the killin' season...it's hot outside, that's a good enough reason"). i was going to post this article to this thread just on that basis, as i'm well acquainted with simplicissimus's fascination with gangs, particularly those on the streets of chicago.
but when i read this, there was no doubt that this article HAD to go on the fort:
"The Rev. Michael Pfleger has ordered the American flag at St. Sabina Church hung upside-down -- a historic sign of distress -- to symbolize the growing death toll among the city's youngsters."
perhaps we should propose some kind of joint effort to stop kids from shooting each other...though exactly what tentfort's role would be int that effort escapes me...i'll leave that to the titular chicago denizens...

It would be nice to hit the Sack around 7:30 or 8:00 for a delicious sandwich and milkshake, and then top it off with a cocktail across the street. Alas, the limited hours make this impossible.
Also, the name's kinda gross. But a great recommendation nonetheless. |

The brown sack
I highly recommend this LTHforum GNR award winning restaurant for an inexpensive lunch or dinner.
http://tinyurl.com/69smwm
The rumsey clan has been going for Saturday lunches over the last few weeks and have worked out way through most of the menu. It is a family friendly spot with excellent quality homemade soups, sandwiches, sides and shakes.
Yesterday's lunch highlights include the BLT with avocado and shrimp, chicken noodle soup, Turkey Reuben, vegi-chili, slaw, blueberry and oatmeal shake.
The owner, Adam, worked for 9 years as the manager at red light and decided he was sick of the corporate restaurant scene, so he opened the brown sack with his gf Malaika (hot). The restaurant walls are filled with framed phish concert posters, there is a book shelf filled with magazines, books and games. There is always some good music on the stereo, and they were more then happy to oblige my kids when they made a music request and decided to have an impromptu dance party.
On my way out yesterday, Adam handed me a stack of 10 cd's he thought that my family would enjoy.
an all around good scene with some tasty, cheap eats.

A Big City Boss Returns, Mannerisms and All
By MICHELINE MAYNARD
CHICAGO — Richard J. Daley died 30 years ago next December. But from the moment Neil Giuntoli sets foot onstage at the tiny Prop Thtr on the Northwest Side of Chicago, it is as if the former mayor has come back to life.
Dressed in a dark sack suit, his hair anointed with brilliantine, his cologne wafting into the 80-seat audience, Mr. Giuntoli, the playwright and star of "Hizzoner," bears a startling resemblance to a revered and reviled politician who remains an icon in the city he once ruled.
"This man was the closest thing you could come to a king," Mr. Giuntoli said.
Mr. Giuntoli, 46, a veteran actor and founding member of the 25-year-old theater, seems to inhabit Daley onstage. And no one is more surprised than some of the people who knew Daley best — friends as well as enemies.
"My jaw dropped open the first time I saw it," said Judy Royko, the widow of the newspaper columnist Mike Royko, with whom the mayor legendarily clashed. Early on in the play, Mr. Giuntoli phones Royko's editor and lambastes his latest column with profane gusto — a scene her husband would have loved, she said.
Mrs. Royko, who attended the play for the second time last Sunday afternoon, said Mr. Giuntoli captured the mayor's mannerisms, from his habit of writing notes when listening to a supplicant to displaying what Mr. Royko once wrote was a "familiar blend of smile and scowl."
As Mrs. Royko put it, "He has the look and the giggle and the twinkle in his eye."
Word of the play is spreading in Daley circles. Last Sunday, Mrs. Royko brought along Lois Wille, the Chicago journalist who won one of her two Pulitzer Prizes for editorials that attacked the mayor for having corrupt policies.
Also in attendance was John McCollom, a politician who served as a pallbearer, alongside Daley, for Matt Danaher, a mayoral aide whose fall from grace and subsequent suicide is described in "Hizzoner." "It was pretty much true," Mr. McCollom said of the play.
Among others who have turned up in the audience are Mr. Daley's former bodyguards and the son of James Conlisk, the former Chicago police superintendent who refused to carry out Mr. Daley's "shoot to kill" order during riots that followed the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Thus far, none of Mr. Daley's family has attended, although friends of his son Richard M. Daley, the current mayor, have said they plan to attend.
The family's absence does not surprise Mr. Giuntoli, who suggested that "Hizzoner" might be simply too emotional an ordeal.
The play begins on Dec. 20, 1976, the day Mr. Daley died of a heart attack. Mr. Giuntoli settled on the opening after seeking advice from Frank Darabont, the three-time Oscar nominee who directed Mr. Giuntoli in "The Shawshank Redemption," the prison drama that starred Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins.
Mr. Giuntoli, the great-great-great nephew of Anthony Cernak, another Chicago mayor with a lifelong fascination for city politics, became fixated on writing about Daley after glimpsing himself in costume for a TV detective role. But he had trouble finding a way into the character of Daley, who waxed sentimental about attending White Sox game with his sons, but who ruthlessly set the police to confront thousands of young protesters during the 1968 Democratic convention. Mr. Darabont told him, "When is a man likely to be the most vulnerable?," Mr. Giuntoli recalled. "On the day of his death. Set it there and look backwards."
The result is a tight two-hour show that explores Daley's many contradictions.
One scene shows him offering a job as a toll taker to the young Jesse Jackson, then a divinity student, implying that he could skim off whatever he needed to pay for tuition. But Mr. Jackson (played by Varrick Douglas) said no, to the amazement of Daley's entourage, a response that is hushed up when the mayor invites Mr. Jackson to keep in touch. Much of the play's second half focuses on 1968, as Daley rails against the hippies who plan to invade Grant Park, declaring them terrorists, not students.
Soon after, at the height of the protests, Daley calls his son Richard to say he will not be coming home that night, asking him to take care of Mrs. Daley. That scene signals the beginning of the decline of the man known as Boss, and brings tears to Mr. Giuntoli's eyes onstage. "Some nights I practically break down," he said.
But by play's end, Mr. Giuntoli is back in full Daley mode, shaking hands with audience members as they depart. One, Fruman Jacobson, a longtime Chicago bankruptcy attorney, said Mr. Giuntoli had depicted the true Mayor Daley, "not some bizarre parody, which it easily could have been in lesser hands."
For Mr. Giuntoli, the former mayor "was flawed and complicated and large."
"He was simple, and yet he was devious," he added. "He was a master politician. And yet he started his day on his knee. It is all these contradictory currents that you try to portray."

Thanks to all who joined us at Inner Town Pub on Friday for our monthly Get-Together. It was a great time, despite the crowd and the fact that, contrary to our listing, Inner Town has no beer garden. The staffer who told us this (why did we believe him?) has been flogged -- he was mistaking Inner Town for Happy Village a block away, which does have an outdoor area. Apparently, after we left around midnight, a flood of people showed up under the impression that there was a beer garden to be had, leading to occupancy issues and Inner Town was closed early by police. Sorry!

Whenever you want...well, actually not exactly.
I have a December trial.
And I January trial (starting somewhere between January 5 and whenever)
And an early February trial.
The good news is that these next three months will "clear off" a lot of what has made me so fucking insanely busy the last 6 months.
The bad news is that I want this stuff cleared off yesterday instead of tomorrow.
I cannot keep this up, nor will I ever try. 3 federal court trials in 3 months (and what looks like 2 more in the 4 months afterwards) will do wonders for your resume and skills, but it is shit for the rest of the things that make up your life. I suppose the silver lining is that this all comes in the dead of winter, and once this stuff is off my plate I'll be nearly as clean and pure as a first year lawyer in terms of workload.
So, if you have any desire to hold off until mid-February, I'm all about it. If you still want January, anytime is good and you have a guest room (with a real bed!) and quarters for free - but it could get dicey with respect to my own time -- especially in the beginning/end of the month.
I love you forever and you're never not welcome with loving, open arms,
