Kids With Cameras

"Daddy, what's film?"

This is a question I realized many children will be asking their parents in the very near future (for the record, mine hasn't yet, but I fully expect him too). With the digital age of photography fully upon us, I came to a pleasant realization. I could give my three year old son my camera, and let him take as many pictures as he wanted, and he could see the results instantly. He friggin' loved it. After his first drop of the camera, however, I realized the drawbacks of this arrangement. So, while I do let him take photos with my camera from time to time, I have gotten him his own, kid-friendly digital camera. The image quality isn't great, but he doesn't care. It's rugged, has cool colors, and a binocular viewfinder so he doesn't have to look through the lens with one eye, which is harder than I thought for really young kids.

Some of the pictures he takes turn out surprisingly well. Sometimes, it's just a happy accident, but sometimes he really composes his frames well. There's also an added benefit that comes from having a perspective on the world that most photographers could only get by holding their camera at crotch level.

Even armed with this experience, I was amazed at the beauty of some of these pictures:

http://kids-with-cameras.org/kidsgallery/

These all come from children in the slums of Calcutta who were featured in the documentary, "Born Into Brothels". If you haven't seen it, I suggest you do. The children themselves make for perfect "characters" in the story, and while the gravity of their situation is not toned down at all in the film, it is handled tastefully and respectfully. I was expecting either a bleak and harsh look at the lives these children lead, or a treacly feel-good movie. Fortunately, it was neither. Instead, the film provides a glimpse into a world most will never experience, and with a unique perspective.

first, ignore that last vertical character at the end...that shouldn't be there.

second, if you look at what you attempted to put in the first time, the important thing to locate is the location of the image amongst the other urls. the first url, that includes kimballhoman, you can ignore. that is the link to the page on flickr where you can see your picture. not relevant there. what you want to put after the src bit in the image included is the actual location of the image, which is the url that ends in .jpg.

so to place pictures in the future...
1. track down the url that ends in .jpg in the bit of code you've gotten from somewhere
2. copy and paste it after the src= bit in the code above
3. replace the : in the url with the ampersand_fifty_eight_semicolon bit....

and there you go...

Go to http://local.live.com/. Type in "1601 Avenida Cesar Chavez SE, 87106" (the address of Albuquerque Isotopes Park - our AAA Marlins farm team) in the address box. You'll have the usual options - road and aerial views, but click on "bird's eye". You can zoom in even more by clicking on the larger buildings icon. You can also change the direction of your view by clicking on the compass. The clarity is unreal. I spent way too much time playing around with this one.

Sadly, they don't have this for every city yet. In fact, I'm baffled by the list of areas that are covered (http://www.birdseyetourist.com/?page_id=559). But you could take a good tour of all the crumbling buildings in Detroit. Have fun.

from a nyt review of an exhibition of lou reed's photographs at the steven kasher gallery in new york...

"i wish i could say that lou reed's photographs approach the originality of his musicianship; that they hint, even vaguely, at the compressed emotions and stripped-down urbanity of his songs. but i can't, because they don't. these color photographs - many taken from the window of mr. reed's tribeca apartment - are ordinary to the point of anonymity."

i'll probably go check out this exhibit for two reasons:

1. to see "the queen's target"

2. to see if my maligned (except by horsebeater) opinion above that most of rog's work is of nothing more than historical interest needs modification. i doubt it, but i'll report back. i can tell you're all on the edges of your respective seats...

i can also see how it would be a little distressing.

most of all, however, i can see how it is funny.

picking up on ludwig's post a couple of ones back...check out keyhole. you download a little viewer and can then zoom in to pretty much any point on the globe. the detail is pretty staggering (though i'm sure that there's a limit to the resolution for national security reasons - even so, certainly a useful research tool for "the terorrists").

trust me, you'll go through an addiction phase with this thing...

The Queen's Target

while i may not be a photog, sexy or otherwise...i, too, was floored by the queen's target.
what an incredible shot. i walk around chicago and no less than 100 times a day i think about whether some object or other would be nice to photograph, but not even in my mind's eye have i ever composed a shot so starkly beautiful.

for those that didn't follow the link, i recommend it highly - just for that shot.

as for publius.....lighten up.

yeah, history's smile is all fangs. sure. but cut the guy some slack.

and it is interesting, no? he was probably entirely uninterested, let alone unaware, of the "power" of the one shot we drool over, while we freely disregard those that he was probably most noted for because they are so overtly sentimental and maudlin.

cliches only become cliches...at first they are uncut wisdom. don't fault him for the millions that came after him and did the same thing.
true - but aren't you a little

Your critique who applies to any artist who produced his or her work when the medium was new. Was the photogrpahy about "art" when it started? No, usually it was reserved for portraiture and recording significant events, such as a bris. I don't think that any of Fenton's contemporaries were doing anyhting terribly avant garde and considered him a fuddy duddy.

the photographs in the slide show on slate are interesting almost exclusively from a historical perspective. with the exception of "the queen's target" (which is great from any perspective) they're really only intriguing in a burns brothers documentary way. the last couple of landscapes are nice technically but the titles turn them into cliches - and the fact that he got there first doesn't do much to mitigate that fact. to anyone living today their impact as art - of their impact at all - is minimal. if you've seen something like the matrix, it's tough to view most of these images as much more than historical snapshots.

and that's all i have to say about that.
timely.

benton's photos are much better, in general, than what's included here:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/17/arts/design/17gilm.html?hp

note the first one -- one of lewis carroll's little girl pictures. while I was in grad school there was a big exhibit of these. one of the reviews included his famous quote: "I am fond of children (except boys)."
