I stumbled on radio shock jock Steve Dahl while stuck in traffic last Friday. His sidekick was reading the news to them so they could banter (it was as painful as it seems).

The sidekick said "Barbara Walters admitted having an affair with a man who was a united states senator, and a black guy, in an interview the other day."

after they talked about Barbara and the senator for a while, Dahl asked "okay, so who was the black guy?" after a pause, sidekick told him it was indeed the senator was also black, Dahl said, "oh, I thought it was Magic Johnson or someone."

interesting article, and especially interesting how less inflammatory a discussion about race and disease seems to be than one about, say, race and sports. i suppose the simple reason is that whereas higher or lower incidences of disease among a given ethnic/racial group is chalked up to genetics/heredity, any set of achievements by a given group must take proactivity (hence the mind - see the mind/body comments in the ashkenazim posts above) into account. and that's where things start to get very slippery...

there are only two differences between the two.

1. what happened to the yids was "over there" a "long time ago".

as far as i'm concerned, it is no mystery. you take a people that is constantly getting picked on, have them have to rely on intellect to survive, and additionally create a situation where the most successful have the easiest time getting out before the massacres begin....what do you expect you are going to get? however because it wasn't "us" and "you" it is easy to discuss.

2. intelligence is a favorable trait while physical prowess is less so.

(interestingly enough, the history of jews is also rife with situations that resulted in "poor" genetic effects. interbreeding has produced a pretty poor "general" physical specimen -- bad teeth and mental illness are two things off the top of my head that are more prevalent in the jewish community and from what i understand can be tied to inbreeding. while this "effect" is being lessened with intermarriage, it is real. but it isn't something that anybody (save a jew) would ever "publicize" or cite.)

more importantly however, it seems pretty clear if we accept darwinism then we must accept that the "average" physical condition of "the healthiest" hunter-gatherers who were captured and transported to america BECAUSE of -- and in direct relation to -- their physical condition, and who were then worked to death (unless they were extremely hardy)
would be better than the "average" physical condition of sedentary farmers or city dwellers.

i have never figured out why nobody hasn't pointed out that you can accept this theory without it having any effect on your view of african-american intelligence. why on earth are they mutually exclusive?

i wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the anti-semitism thread, but anyway...

http://washingtontimes.com/upi-breaking/20050603-115516-3639r.htm

now, according to this theory about the generally higher level of intellectual horsepower among the ashkenazim, it is a result of "the restriction of Ashkenazim in medieval Europe to occupations that required more than usual mental agility".

so you have a subjugated people who, perhaps, developed what pretty much anyone would consider to be a positive trait as a result of their "subjugation".

as far as i can tell no one is up in arms about this. a quick check of the anti-defamation league doesn't turn up any mention of it:

http://www.adl.org/default.htm

now what, pray tell, is the difference between saying that PERHAPS the ashkenazim have a demonstrably higher level of intellectual achievement because of a period of exteme environmental pressures, and saying that PERHAPS black athletes have a demonstrably higher level of athletic achievement because of a period of extereme environmental pressures?

i think the question has more to do with how society views the mind vs. the body than it does with any particular strain of racism/anti-semitism.

or maybe not. maybe attributing ANY conceivable "advantage" to slavery is simply too dangerous for american society to allow, whereas saying that jews in medieval europe gained an "advantage" from being forced to worked in certain trades is ok because it is so distant.

in the way of a "just to be clear" disclaimer...i have no idea why/if the ashkenazim have demonstrably higher intellects, just as i have no idea why/if blacks whose ancestors were subjected to slavery have demonstrably higher athletic ability. all i'm saying is that either one is CONCEIVABLE, and that having a discussion about the POSSIBILITY is not an inherently racist/anti-semitic thing.

there's a big difference between intellectual honesty and racism/anti-semitism...

Charges filed against Patriots cornerback Ty Law for resisting arrest in April were dropped yesterday. Prosecutors had alleged that Law sped off in his car after being pulled over for a lane violation, and then led police on a brief foot chase through Miami Beach, but police dismissed the charge and returned his $150 bond. "This is a classic case of DWB: driving while black,'' Law's attorney Joel Hirschhorn told the Boston Herald. "There was no basis for this arrest."

Law has had enough distractions this offseason with his contract dispute. It's nice to hear this won't be an issue going forward.
more on ron atkinson...

http://football.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,9753,1202845,00.html

i think there are two questions here, given what he said after the chelsea match, what he now has to say about what he said, and his conduct and reputation up to the point of his comments after the game:

1. how does one feel about atkinson personally?
2. how does one handle a ron atkinson as a society?

to question 1 (the more complex of the two, in my opinion):

i'm torn on this one. part of me feels sorry for the guy - his record on race in professional football, an extremely charged racial environment (black players are still greeted by monkey noises and banana peels being thrown onto the pitch with, if not regularity, alarming frequency), borders on the exemplary. but clearly there's a part of him, perhaps hard-wired by the society and times from which he comes, that still recognizes, on some level, a difference between a player he would see as a "a lazy fucker" and "a lazy fucking nigger" (the fact that he was talking about marcel desailly, captain of the french national side and one of the most universally lauded and respected players in the game makes this particular instance that much more incompreshensible). we're all both products and victims of our environment. in the end i think where i come down on atkinson personally tilts more towards feeling sorry for him. while what he said was reprehensible and inexcusable, he's demonstrated over the course of a life the ability to rise above a formative environment that could very easily have made him a banana-tossing yob.

to question number 2

this i think is straightforward. society (as i envision it) has an obligation to condemn instances like atkinson's outburst without taking into account the man who makes them. moving societal attitudes on topics like race take generations and generations of slow plodding. if you're atkinson you need to realize that one of your flaws is the basic short circuit in your character that makes an outburst like he made possible, and that being a part of the process of moving society towards a place where the machinery itself, and not just the advertising, is more just, means keeping your hands away from the moving parts. if you don't have the capability to recognize the flaws you wish you didn't have, you should expect nothing less than to be caught out by them at some point. why do you think greek tragedy still holds such sway over our imaginations - the fatal flaw is everything in the end. what happened with/to atkinson seems to me to fit the classical definition of tragedy.

when all the arithmetic is done, i feel sorry for the guy and wish he could have managed himself better. there's an argument to be made that that statement tacitly endorses "country club racism" where everyone says the right thing and simply becomes more crafty with their racism to more effectively fly under radar. in a very narrow interpretation it could be seen that way, but that's certainly not my intention. everybody has demons which shouldn't see the light of day, and how one deals with them is perhaps the truest test of character. you judge a man by his words and his actions taken as a whole, but his thoughts and his interior struggles remain, as they should, his own.
