yes, we invaded afghanistan in 2001.

yes, cheney was vice-president from 2001-2009, at which time bin laden slipped away from tora bora, then afghanistan was "a victory", then afghanistan was an after-thought, then afghanistan slowly slid back into chaos.

does cheney feel like his team bears any responsibility for the situation in afghanistan? nope.

you see, it's all obama's fault for bowing to a japanese figurehead (which, you know, is how people in japan show respect).

say what you want about bush, but the man has shown an awful lot of dignity and class for handing the reigns over and fading from the scene.

my wife, when she heard of the shooting and where the guy got hit, immediately said: I hope those didn't get into his carotid, but I bet they did. She thinks that there could be a number of pellets in his arteryy and that the medical staff are afriad that they'll dislodge and cause a clot. My wife thinks that's what caused the "silent" heart attack. She also said that the normal course would be to perform heart surgery - but, s the news reports indictaed, this guy is pretty old (78) and they don't want to do it unless they have to.

I keep thinking about the right's hounding of clinton for private behavior. The sitting president couldn't forestall civil litigation - his immunity didn't extend that far. If this guy dies, and I hope he doesn't, will cheney attempt to raise the same defense? It shouldn't stand because he would be under investigation of a private act, not an executive act . . .

knowing nothing about hunting, i have no idea what actually happened, but these all seem like very valid questions ... also, if i felt like this administration had a habit of telling the truth and being forthcoming about what is actually going on in the world, i don't think any of this would have come up (then again, if that were the case a cheney spokesperson would have immediately spoken to the press about it, etc.).

THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES SHOT A GUY.

Further down the rabbit hole..
posted by: simplicissimus 20:19 2.14.06
I am now utterly convinced that there was something fishy with this shooting.

Check that, there *was* nothing fishy about it until the whole apparatus went into motion. From the top of my head, here's why:

1) When you roust a covey of quail they shoot up pretty high in the air...this is when they "light up" (wings flapping, moving pretty slow and fairly vertical to take off), and this is when you shoot them.

2) I don't care how tall this guy was, he is fair bit shorter than one would expect someone shooting quail to be aiming...

3) Cheney didn't allow himself to be interviewed until early Sunday morning, despite the fact that authorities came out that evening -- when he was there eating dinner -- to talk to him (and were turned away). This makes no sense, unless (a) Cheney wanted a lawyer there -- which, given the story, makes no fucking sense -- but is possible; or (b) Cheney had been drinking.

4) They apparently took this guy to a small town hospital that was further away in travel time than corpus christi, a much bigger city with a much bigger hospital (where the medical facilities are obviously better). I can think of no reason to do so besides trying to keep this secret.

---

Look, this isn't a sin, not even a minor one. A people drink and shoot all the time (it may even be required out west). And smart people do stupid things with guns every day while hunting. So far, so good. I'm willing to buy it all. No big deal, nothing to get excited about and nothing worth discussing.

---

HOWEVER, and this is what motivated me to write: Cheney has been totally silent about this. Nothing. He won't even appear in public. And I'm gonna tell you why: Whatever actually happened (a sober, or drunk, or tipsy old guy's gun goes off or he loses his shit and takes a risky or bad shot...) is not the same thing as what the public story is. However, so long as Cheney doesn't tell that public story, so long as none of the explanations or accounts or characterizations are his, if the public story ever breaks down, there won't be any videotape/written statement by cheney for the press/public to clamor about being "a lie."

Occum's razor. In combination with the m.o. of this administration. I'd bet a sizeable amount of money that I'm absolutely right on this. And I'd bet even more that that fact will never come out.

But, a few things to keep in mind:

1) A 28 gauge is a pretty damn small shotgun...the only thing smaller, to my knowledge, is a .410 - which the shotgun of choice for 12 year olds and 5'1" housewives. This isn't to say that there's anything wrong with a .28 gauge, and for shooting something like quale you can't use anything much bigger. Plus, as you would image, Cheney has a damn fine Italian job - so he gets props for that (although, really, what else would one expect?).

2) The effective "spray" of a .28 gague doesn't last much longer than 30-35 yards. At least that's my guess. By that I mean that at 30 yards yer probably talking a 12-18 inch pattern but any further than that and i think it loses its tightness, effectiveness, and power and probably slows down and falls away.

3) I keep hearing conflicting reports of where this guy was injured.
and how far away he/the game was from Cheney. This is all relevant because (a) if the guy was only hit in the face, neck, chest he was probably closer than they say because that's a smaller spray pattern than what i would expect at 30 yards, but I also heard the ribcage, which would lead me to believe the story being told is about right; and (b) if the guy had pellets enter his heart, i would once again expect him to be closer, because at even 30 yards i have to wonder whether there'd be enough "power" left to get that deep.

Of course, I have no idea what kind of choke his shotgun has (which could moderate the spray in any manner of ways, making it bigger or smaller), as well as what kind of shot he was using (lead is heavier and more powerful, i think, that that shit those environmentalist commies make everyone use nowadays).

Also: I'd keep my eye on when the accident happened. Everyone is saying 5:30, which is @an hour before sundown. Which makes perfect sense. But for those that have been out at sundown when a whole mess of birds come in (I believe me, publius, and Harley may have experienced just this phenomenon), it is damn near impossible to stop shooting well past when you know you should. Of course, I think they were on a game farm, so this really wasn't an issue i wouldn't think.

Finally: A game farm is the lamest thing in the whole wide world. Really, bagging a quale on a game farm is about as impressive as hooking a trout at a trout farm (not that i...ehem...know anything about that): that is to say, not very.

---

In short, well, nothing.

I hope that guy doesn't die.

But I'm still willing to bet that there's an embarassing detail yet to surface about this whole thing, but rural Texan republicans aren't likely to talk much about this, are they? However, if there was full disclosure I'm willing to bet that the story doesn't quite add up.

The VP's office and everyone else involved has given the impression that the guy suffered more welts and surface cuts than anything else. They all gave the impression that he was hale and hearty in the hosptial and more embarassed than anything else.

Of course, none of the previous accounts jibed with his placement in the ICU. Hospitals are pretty restrictive about placing someone in the ICU, particularly if he was "peppered" with shot - a relatively minor injury - as described by all involved. It makes you wonder how close cheney was to whittington when cheney pul led the trigger . . .

What bothers me about all this is that it was handled as the VP handles everything - no one needs to know. Indeed, affirmative acts are taken to hide the truth. He acts as if he is accountable to no one and behaves accordingly.

Can you imagine if Al Gore - in his slenderer, more relevant days as VP - shot someone? Can you imagine the hounding he and everyone else would have taken from the Whitewater nuts?
